CAN THE DETECTORS BE TRACKED FROM A SATELLITE?"TOUS LES ARTICLES DANS CETTE SECTION SONT A TITRE INFORMATIF UNIQUEMENT ET ILS SONT ECRITS D'UNE FAÇON A CE QUE LE LECTEUR PUISSE COMPRENDRE FACÝLEMENT!"
A common question in the minds of detector users is whether the detector they purchased is tracked via satellites. Though this is a very straightforward matter, complications arise due to the technological terms used. The GPS devices used on detectors are receivers only, and are incapable of transmitting any data. You can get detailed information about GPS devices from the Internet. GPS modules are also present in navigation devices used in cars. It is not possible, by design, for the GPS device to report its location. Location reporting can be possible not through GPS, but through GPRS (over the sim card). Yet no detector producer to date has attached sim cards to their devices. No detector producer carries a sim card onboard. Therefore, it is technically impossible for GPS mounted detectors and navigation devices to report your location to third parties.
No detector producer would be willing to attach a sim card to their products in order to engage in (illegal) tracking, and they would have no incentives to do so anyway. Any person, with even a basic level of electronics knowledge can check if a device carries a sim card or not, and would be able to bring legal action against the producer.
There are also devices which are not directly related with the issue here, but crucial in terms of understanding the technology. The most common devices which contain both GPS and GPRS circuitry, capable of reporting your position to third parties are mobile phones. In any case, your permission is required for the combined use of both features in these phones. Yet viruses which may infect the phone may cause a risk in this respect. Such viruses may report your location to third parties, making combined use of the GPS and GPRS modules.
There are also tablets and notebook PCs which carry a combination of both GPS and GPRS modules, just like a mobile phone. The single most important fact to have in mind is that, without GPRS (via sim card) no device can report your location to third parties.
